As part of my public health medical training, I have had direct experience of working within a high profile health policy area at ministry of health level.
I was commissioned by the UK Covid-19 Inquiry as an expert witness alongside Professor Aneel Bhangu to co-author a report on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on colorectal cancer care in the UK.
I have done extensive work on the impact of COVID-19 on elective waiting lists in the NHS, including a major policy report and peer-reviewed data in The Lancet (impact of Omicron, nowcasting waiting lists).
I am the first author of two clinical guidelines covering surgical site infection prevention, and surgical care during the COVID-19 pandemic.
I co-led the CovidSurg Collaborative, which was the global surgery community’s research response to COVID-19. CovidSurg produced the most influential research in shaping global surgical practice during the pandemic and it directly informed guidance issued by national colleges and societies across the world, including RCSEng, RCoA, RCPCH, RACS, ASA.
I have contributed to several commentaries and editorials about future priorities for surgical practice, policy, and research.
