MBChB MPH PhD FFPH
Since I qualified in medicine in 2012, I have followed a unique pathway combining basic surgical and public health training, gaining international recognition as a researcher in surgical epidemiology. I have trained across the NHS, local government, central government, and academia, and I am currently in my final year of public health medicine specialty training.
I am a NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer (assistant professor), combining my public health training with research at the University of Birmingham. My primary academic affiliation is to the NIHR Unit on Global Surgery where I work with Professor Aneel Bhangu. I am the pandemic preparedness lead for the Health Protection Research Unit in Emergency Preparedness and Response, a collaboration between the university and UKHSA. I am also affiliated to the NIHR Group on Environmentally Sustainable Hospitals in LMICs and the NIHR Sandwell Health Determinants Research Collaboration.
My aim is to produce evidence that directly informs and influences high priority policy areas in global surgery and sustainable healthcare. Specific research projects that I am currently working on are focussed around hospital preparedness, postoperative mortality, surgical site infection, and net-zero health systems.
I am a senior public health registrar completing my specialty training in the West Midlands.
I am internationally recognised in global surgery and surgical health systems research. Methodologies include RCTs, prospective cohort studies, evidence synthesis, health economics, carbon accounting.
My clinical public health work has given me direct health policy experience. I undertake health policy research and my data has directly led to policy change.
I have done live broadcast interviews for the BBC, Times Radio, and LBC. My research has been extensively covered by both UK and international media.
I supervise masters and PhD students at the University of Birmingham in topics including global surgery, sustainability in healthcare, and health systems research.
I have created a some resources for anyone interested in clinical-academic careers and looking for academic clinical fellowship and PhD opportunities.
